Batik etc.

As children, my sister and I were always provided with opportunities to make art. And we still do. All kinds, all media with and without the requisite technical knowledge. It’s fun. It’s a way of absorbing the world and reproducing it. It’s an act of love and a commentary on life.

Images are available as prints of various sizes. Contact me through the site if you are interested.

Batik is a resist medium in which the artist paints with wax on fabric and then dyes it in cold water dye bath. Cotton, rayon, silk and absorbent paper can be used for the image. Wax can be applied in sequences, the first waxing over the background color, the next over the dyed color and the next over the combination color achieved through subsequent dying. Dye can also be applied with brush or spray allowing colors that normally would not be achieved in the step dye. Cracks in the wax, and the manner in which the wax is applied add shadow and surprise to the whole. Sometimes, I play with images of batiks to manipulate them further.
